Blade Wheel Cover
These photos show the main blade wheel cover for the bandsaw. This is an important protective shield that covers the blade wheels and protects the user's hands when lifting the saw arm. It has been damaged as a result of the blade working its way off the blade wheels and cutting into the cover.
These photos show the damage more clearly. The blade wheel cover still performs its function, but since I was in the process of repairing the rest of the bandsaw, it seemed a shame not to repair this at the same time.
I started by removing the paint in the areas that had been damaged. This was done with a "non-woven preparation wheel" fitted to an angle grinder.
These photos show a close up of the main damaged areas with the paint removed. The metal is very thin, which makes repairing it a challenging exercise.
I used the TIG welder to fill in the material where it had been cut away by the saw blade. The photos above show the (slightly shabby) welds, prior to grinding them back with a flap disk. There was some distortion of the shape of the blade wheel cover (this might have been helped had I clamped some aluminium to the rear of the guard, but that hadn't occurred to me when I was doing it).
These two images show the two blade wheel covers (the arguably pointless one on the right sits below the main blade wheel cover in case anyone decides to put their arm in from behind the motor). Both were given a coat of primer (as shown in the left-hand photo, taken while the primer was still wet) and then a couple of coats of black spray paint (as shown in the right-hand photo).
These photos show the blade wheel cover fitted to the upper arm of the bandsaw.
This photo shows the slightly less useful lower blade guard and where it fits on the saw.
