The next job was to sort out the cut-outs into which the cross-pieces (which will support the mesh) will sit. The first job was to mark them all out; a total of 12 notches need cutting.
For the six that sit against a slot, the best way I could think of to remove the waste was simply to chop it out with a chisel:
For the ones that sit against the rebate, I could wobble the bulk of the waste out:
I could then tidy up with the chisel:
It's not pretty, but it was quick and it should work:
If only I could cut dovetails that fit that well!
