Add a New Explorer Challenge

If an Explorer Challenge you're working on is missing from the list, I can add it very easily. I'll need a few simple pieces of information, which you can send to me using the contact form:

  1. Map Number: The number of the Explorer Map (e.g. 167)
  2. Map Name: The name of the Explorer Map (e.g. "Thornbury, Dursley & Yate")
  3. Geocache Code: The "GC" code of the geocache (e.g. "GC4QQBE")
  4. Target: The number of squares in which caches must be found to complete the challenge
  5. The extents of the map (see below)

For the extents of the map, what I need depends on the shape of the area covered by the map. Most of the challenges use a map that represents a simple rectangular area.

Extents for Rectangular Maps

For these cases, the information I need is very simple: the numbers in the corners of the map. Consider the images below (taken from Explorer Map 167). Just outside of the boundary of the map there are some numbers that represent the extents of the map. You can click on the images to make them a bit bigger.

Top Left Bottom Right

In this case, the numbers I need are:

  • Northern Limit: 203000
  • Western Limit: 353000
  • Eastern Limit: 380000
  • Southern Limit: 181000

Extents for Non-Rectangular Maps

These are (inevitably) more complicated. In this case, please read the description above of what I need for rectangular maps and then use your best judgement regarding how to describe the shape. What I actually use in the javascript code to describe these shapes is the extents of the rectangle that includes the entire map and then similar extents of rectangles that should be 'cut away' from the overall rectangle. However, if that doesn't make sense, just send me whatever information you can and I'll see what I can work out or I'll ask for more information if I need it!

Examples

By way of example, the javascript code is actually auto-generated from this Google Spreadsheet, which should give some idea of the details I need. I've already included all of the ordnance survey maps that I own (even if there aren't existing geocaching challenges for those maps), so for these maps all I'll need is the geocache code and the number of squares needed for the challenge.
